Maranta Kerchoveana (Prayer Plant, Rabbits Paw Plant)

Maranta Kerchoveana, also known as the “Rabbit’s Paw” plant, is a tropical species native to the Brazilian rainforest. This plant grows on the forest floor and thrives in a humid environment with low to medium light. Belgian botanist Charles François Antoine Morren discovered it in the mid-19th century.

Maranta Kerchoveana is a popular houseplant due to its attractive foliage, featuring long, slender green leaves with unique markings resembling a rabbit’s footprint. The plant is also known for its ability to move its leaves, known as the “prayer plant” due to its habit of folding its leaves upward at night.

These plants are relatively easy to care for and make great indoor plants for beginners. They prefer well-draining soil and frequent watering, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. With proper care, Maranta Kerchoveana can grow up to 18 inches tall and 12 inches wide, making them ideal for small spaces.

Where should I put the Prayer Plant?

Keep in a filtered bright to medium light but away from direct light.

Feed with a liquid feed every month from April – August. We sell vegan, organic plant food, have a look!

How often should I water?

The soil should never be allowed to dry out completely. Not enough water and overwatering can cause the leaves to turn yellow and drop from the plant. If the leaves begin to turn yellow, water the plant less often if the soil is still wet or more often if the soil appears dry between waterings.

Increase the humidity in the room with a humidifier, mist regularly or set a pan or dish filled with pebbles and water below the plant to increase the room’s humidity, brown tips will show the humidity is too low

Are they suitable if you have pets?

Maranta are not toxic to cats and dogs if nibbled.
